New Planting
OPTIMUM GERMINATION AND ESTABLISHMENT OF SEEDLINGS WILL RESULT IF BERMUDAGRASS
IS PLANTED AFTER SOIL TEMPERATURES STABILIZE AT OR ABOVE 65°F (FROM APRIL TO
JULY IN MOST AREAS).
1. Establish a rough grade by tilling soil as deeply as possible.
2. Test the soil and follow recommendations. Apply lime to raise pH to at least
6.0.
3. Finish working up the seedbed and establish final grade to provide surface
drainage.
4. Compact soil surface by rolling and settle surface by irrigating.
5. Seed at a rate of 2-3 pounds per 1,000 square feet. Broadcast half the seed in
one direction and the remainder at a right angle to the first.
6. Rake lightly or top-dress to cover and stabilize the newly planted seed.
Maximum planting depth is 1/8 inch.
7. Keep soil moist until seedlings are well rooted. Reduce irrigation frequency
and increase irrigation volume. Deep water percolation contributes to deeper,
hardier roots.
Turf Area Renovation & Repair
1. Apply a non-selective broad spectrum herbicide at the recommended
label rate to kill existing vegetation.
2. Test the soil and follow recommendations. Apply lime to raise pH to at least
6.0.
3. Work soil surface extensively by aerating or vigorously raking 10 days after
herbicide application.
4. Broadcast Sahara Bermudagrass seed at a rate of 1-2 pounds per 1,000 square
feet in two or more directions.
5. Rake lightly or top-dress to cover and stabilize the newly planted seed.
Maximum planting depth is 1/8 inch.
6. Keep the soil moist until seedlings are well rooted.
Care & Maintenance
Fertilize with a balanced fertilizer in spring and fall. Lime yearly where acid
soils are a problem. When a green lawn is wanted year around, overseed in the
fall with annual or perennial ryegrass. Bermudagrass forms a very tight,
wear-resistant turf.
