Ryegrass seed are "throw and grow" seed that can
be planted without the hassle of tilling or digging into the soil and destroying
any of the permanent ground covers already in place. First, perform a soil test,
applying lime as needed. Please see recommended lime chart. Till or rough up the
soil. Using a spreader, spread the seed. Rake the seed into the soil no deeper
than the recommended planting depth noted above to establish good seed to soil
contact. Keep the area moist until germination.
Watering Instructions
First planting – Water twice a day for approximately 5 minutes. You are just
trying to get the seed moist so it will germinate. Once the seed has germinated
you will water less often but for a longer period of time. For example, every
other day or every third or fourth day for 20-30 minutes until the seed has
matured. What this does is train the roots to dig within the soil to access
water and will help the plant to become more drought tolerant.
Fertilization
Fertilize with a balanced starter fertilizer 2-4 weeks before planting.
Maintenance
Once lawn is established, apply a pre-emergent in early spring. If weeds
persist, apply an herbicide in mid-spring. Do not apply any weed killers until
at least 3-4 weeks after establishment. Use lime when pH is low.
