New Seeding
Apply seed at the rate of 2 pounds per 1,000 square feet on new or overseeded
lawns. Mix 20 pounds of dry sand with one pound of seed and spread at right
angles creating a crossing pattern on your lawn.
To allow for maximum contact between the sand and the soil, rototill or scratch
area to be seeded to a depth of two to three inches. Drag the surface smooth and
firm the seedbed. Evenly distribute seed over the soil and lightly scratch or
rake area. Cover the seed no more than ¼” with soil. Apply a balanced fertilizer
at the rate recommended on the bag. Mulch lightly with wheat straw to prevent
washing and to keep soil moist. On existing lawns, scalp lawn and remove all
grass clippings. Fertilize, then distribute seed evenly and rake then distribute
seed evenly and rake to help seed gain contact with the soil.
Improving Bare Spots
Mow your lawn closely, then remove leaves, dead grass, etc. Rake, harrow
lightly, or aerate the bare spots to prepare the seedbed. Conduct a soil test to
be sure the soil has the proper balance of nutrients. Fertilize and lime if
needed. Sow the seed and gently rake to cover. Keep the area well watered until
the seed germinate and the seedlings have grown sufficiently to cover bare
spots, then water as needed.
Watering Instructions
Water a newly seeded or overseeded lawn daily to maintain a constant source of
moisture for the seed. Do not allow the top ½” of soil to become dry. Once grass
begins to grow and establishes a lawn, reduce watering to twice a week with ½”
of water per application.
Care & Maintenance
Fertilize in fall and early spring with a balanced fertilizer. Use lime when pH
is low. Water twice weekly when established.
