Grasses
in Alabama
RECOMMENDED LAWN GRASS TYPES:
The primary grass in Alabama is probably Bermudagrass. Both
common and improved Bermuda varieties can be found. While
Northern Alabama lies in a transitional zone, the cool season grasses
(Fescue, Ryegrass, Bluegrass) will struggle to survive the hot
summer temperatures when planted. They do fine through the
fall and winter, but don't expect them to survive a summer without
reseeding. Because of the summer heat stress, warm season
grasses are the primary grasses planted in Alabama.

The USDA plant hardiness map was
developed by the United States Department of Agriculture - ARS
Division. The 11 zones are based on the average annual
minimum temperature for each zone. Zone 2 on the above
map is coldest and Zone 11 is the Hottest. This information is
used in selecting plants for your micro climate areas.
A lot
of factors including altitude, wind exposure, proximity to water,
snow cover, soil types and location in mountainous terrain
(valley, North, South locations) have effects on the annual
temp. These factors can change the hardiness zone as much as
2 zones difference. This applies both for plants that do
best in cool weather and in hot weather, with the growing zone
being extended based on all the factors.
