Grasses in Arizona
RECOMMENDED LAWN GRASS TYPES:
The primary grass used in Arizona is Bermudagrass where
water is available. Both
common and improved Bermuda varieties can be found. While
parts of Northern Arizona lies in a transitional zone, the cool season grasses
(Fescue, Ryegrass, Bluegrass) will struggle to survive the hot
summer temperatures when planted. They do fine through the
fall and winter, but don't expect them to survive a summer without
annual reseeding. Because of the high summer heat stress,
warm season grasses are the primary grasses planted in Arizona.
Water is also an important issue in grass survival in Arizona
along with Desert conditions.
