MARYLAND LAWNS:
Tall Fescue lawns are generally considered the most
desirable lawn grass for Maryland. The newer improved
turf-types perform well in the climate of Maryland. Zoysia
Grass is also a good choice for Maryland, though it will be
dormant (brown) during winter months.
When compared to Bluegrasses (also grown in Maryland), the
Tall Fescues will persist and handle drought conditions much
better. Fertilization is required to maintain a good stand
of Fescue and an annual re-seeding program (in the fall if
possible) is a good idea to maintain a thick dense Tall Fescue
lawn.
Turf Mixtures containing Fine Fescues including Creeping
Red are suggested for use in Maryland if shade is an issue.
Perennial Ryegrass is often included where fast establishment is a
requirement.
