Recommended Grass For Michigan Lawns
Michigan Lawns consist primarily
of Kentucky Bluegrass,
Perennial Ryegrass and
Fine Fescues (Creeping Red).
Kentucky Bluegrass is the most common lawn found in Michigan.
It is often established with the addition of Perennial Ryegrass to
allow for faster establishment & cover. Bluegrass seeds
can often take several months to germinate, while Ryegrass
will germinate fast (7-14 days) and can provide erosion control and
cover until the Bluegrass dominates. Creeping Red is
often added in to lawn areas where shade issues are a problem
though it can be planted as a species even in full sun.
Other Grasses:
Bentgrass
is often found as a weed in Michigan lawns. It is not very
drought or heat tolerant and looks rough in manicured lawns cut at
normal heights. Improved varieties are used on golf greens
mowed at low heights with reel mowers. Most turf agronomist
recommend that homeowners do not plant this grass due to high
maintenance issues.
Rough
Bluegrass is found in shady areas but is
generally considered a weed. Its primary use is in moist /
shaded sites.
Tall Fescue is considered a weed also in Bluegrass lawns, but pure stands make a drought tolerant, wear tolerant grass on playgrounds, industrial sites and roadsides. It has gained in popularity with the newer turf quality varieties available for home lawn use.
Zoysia is planted some in Michigan, but its short summer season of green
limits its use. It will be dormant and brown colored from fall through late spring.
