Recommended Grass For Oklahoma Lawns
OKLAHOMA LAWNS:
There are wide seasonal differences in climate in
Oklahoma which make choosing a grass species more difficult. Most soils in Oklahoma require lime to improve the pH for best growth. Bermudagrass is the most popular of species planted for lawns. In the Western and panhandle areas, Buffalograss is your best choice due to the lower annual rainfall amounts.
Turf Grasses for Oklahoma:
Choose a turfgrass for planting in Oklahoma based on the environmental planting of your
site and the personal preferences of the turf variety. Shade, water needs, soil conditions (poor or adequate) should all be considered in choosing a turfgrass for your lawn.
WARM SEASON GRASSES:
Bermudagrass,
Buffalograss and Zoysia grass are the main warm season grasses commonly planted in Oklahoma. These grasses survive the hot summers best, but are generally brown and dormant during winter months.
COOL SEASON GRASSES:
You will also find that several cool season species are occasionally planted. These include
Tall Fescue, Perennial Ryegrass and
Kentucky Bluegrass. Most times they are used in areas that have higher shade issues as the warm season grasses tend to struggle in shade. The cool season grasses can be planted in full sun lawns, but in Oklahoma this will require supplemental irrigation to help these varieties survive during the summer months.
